  This week we come to the 6 th Newbery Winner from Smoky the Cowhorse by Will James. It reminded me of a mix between Black Beauty set in the American West and a Nature Channel special about a plains horse narrated by a Cowboy. It chronicles the life of the semi-wild horse Smoky from his first steps until the very end of his life. Spelling of title. I read this Will James book as a small child in the 60's, and I remembered the title simply to be Smokey however I may have forgotten but being a horse lover I never forgot the story.

There are wonderful English horse books, but "Smoky the Cowhorse" was the book of my childhood. It is not necessarily a "children's book", rather a saga of an animal who goes from mis-treatment to redemption with an older, very realistic cowboy, who tames this "untamable" animal and, with kindness, makes him his loyal friend and by: 5.
